Open Letter: A Disappointed Taxpayer — Southern Lakes Deserves Better
Tyler Porter’s campaign bio paints a picture of a community-minded leader: a Kaska member rooted in Watson Lake, a father, a volunteer, and someone who values listening, connection, and practical solutions. Those words promised a representative who would put Southern Lakes first. Three months into his term, that promise is already looking hollow.
Residents of Southern Lakes expected urgent attention to the basic needs that determine our quality of life: reliable healthcare access, infrastructure that doesn’t fall apart, meaningful local economic support, and accountable, present representation. Instead, taxpayers are seeing an MLA whose actions so far echo the same absent, insider-first approach as his predecessor, Stacey Hassard—prioritizing party favors and political posturing over the people who actually live here.
We’ve watched Tyler Porter spend time in Whitehorse and appear at events that boost fellow politicians’ profiles, while everyday problems at home remain unaddressed. When local constituents raise pressing concerns, there’s silence or bureaucratic deflection. When infrastructure needs urgent repair, timelines drift. When families seek clearer plans for service improvements, they receive vague reassurances instead of concrete commitments.
This is not the leadership Southern Lakes needs. We need an MLA who shows up here first, who brings tangible projects and transparent timelines, and who fights for resources that improve life in our towns and on the land we rely on. Promises to “bring people together” are empty if they don’t translate into action: scheduled town halls, clear reporting on constituency work, advocacy for healthcare and housing, and visible progress on projects that matter to residents.
Taxpayers are watching. We will document attendance, record meetings, and publish what we see. If Mr. Porter continues prioritizing party politics and photo ops in Whitehorse over the pressing needs of Southern Lakes, we will hold him accountable—through stories, public record, and the ballot box.
You campaigned on community. Now show it. Be present. Be accountable. Make measurable progress. Until then, disappointment is the only honest response from the people you were elected to serve.
Nobody has pride any more. Has politics fallen to the lowest form of corruption and to only benefit them with money and perks? I hope not . So just remember if you want to act like Ontario, we're only a population under 50.000 and when you walk down the street let's see if you can hold your head up high or your nose.
— Norm Boisvert, Southern Lakes taxpayer and concerned resident
