LOOKS LIKE THE LIBERALS ARE WHISPERING IN PREMIER CURRIE DIXON EAR ON HOW DEFENDING HIS EXPENSIVE SPEACH TO YUKON AND GET AWAY WITH IT

Premier Currie Dixon Government of Yukon

Premier Dixon,

As a taxpayer in this territory, I feel robbed.

Spending $24,000 on a speech that tells us we’re in a “fiscal apocalypse” while suggesting federal intervention is possible is an insult to the people who pay the bills. If the government is truly short of funds, wasting public money on political theatre rather than practical solutions is unacceptable.

When I asked Minister Linda Benoit about reopening a road, I was told it would cost me $25,000 as a one-time fee. Yet the Premier can authorize a $24,000 speech with no explanation. This isn’t leadership it’s a slap in the face to residents who already struggle with rising costs and who expect responsible stewardship of our tax dollars.

Driving in Whitehorse increasingly feels like navigating a Toronto suburb, and the city’s growing demands for territorial funding won’t sit well if your administration continues to prioritize optics over accountability. If municipal services need upgrades, increase residential taxes appropriately or reallocate existing funds sensibly don’t beg the territory for handouts while the territorial government mismanages its own spending.

As an elected official, you should be expected to manage public funds responsibly. If you can’t be bothered to make prudent choices about where taxpayer dollars go, then you shouldn’t hold the responsibilities of office. The territory deserves a government that treats its citizens with respect and fiscal competence, not one that squanders money on speeches while asking residents to shoulder the costs.

Sincerely,

Norm Boisvert
